Chapter 26

Valhallen Compound, Castle Rock, Colorado

Sam Dale

Bright sparks showered up into the air as hammers clanged, metal against metal. Someone was using a power grinder. There was the constant background noise of a big Honda gas generator. Like on the floor of a busy factory, everyone was working, doing their specific jobs. Everyone but Sam and Cypress.

Justified or not, Sam found himself cringing as the forward section of the Landa-Craft was being retrofitted with the M134 minigun and its auxiliary ammo pods. If the spacecraft was anyone’s, it would be Cypress’s. Just the same, Sam thought of it as his. He’d flown the thing maybe a total of an hour. Still, with every hammer blow and every grind of a power tool, he had to check himself from yelling for these cretins to be careful.

Periodically, Sam spotted the tops of the two individuals who were working up in the cockpit. With Gia’s help, they were connecting power and adding the Bluetooth interface for the M134 minigun.

Sam got to thinking about his own employees. Up until now, he had resisted calling them, knowing that once he did, they would have the ability to use their phones to call others within the isolation zone. Where spreading panic was certainly a concern earlier, clearly, that ship had sailed. The populace of Castle Rock was already panicked, if not terrified.

He pulled out his iPhone and scrolled through his contacts. He tapped on Luna Kelly’s name and waited for her to pick up.

“Hello?”

“Luna? This is Sam. I just—”

“Sam! How…are the phone lines working again?”

He could hear the anxiety in her voice. The panic. “No. But I can’t get into that right now. I’m just checking in on you…to see if you’re all right.”

The line went quiet for several moments. “My dad. He was shot.”

“Shot! Who shot him, Luna?”

“I don’t know. A stray bullet came in through the window. He’s dead. Died right in front of us on the kitchen floor.”

He heard her near-silent sobs. She sniffed. When she spoke again, Sam could tell she was fighting back more tears. “Sam, what is going on? Do you know anything about all this…whatever this is?”

He was tempted to say no but couldn’t. “Yes, Luna, I know exactly what is going on. But you probably wouldn’t believe me.”

“Try me.”

And so, he told her. It took ten minutes, and she listened without interruption. When he was finished, she said, “I want to help. I have to do something, Sam. They killed my dad. Maybe not directly, but this is their—what did you call them, the Silarians? This is the Silarians’ fault. Please let me be a part of whatever you are doing.”

“You should stay and be with your mother—”

“No. We’re with the neighbors. She and my brother and sister are with people. Don’t discount me just because I’m sixteen. I’m going to be a part of this.”

He thought for a moment. “Can you get yourself to the police station?”

“Uh, yeah. It’s not that far a walk.”

“It’s not safe out on the streets.
